ACT NOW TO REPAIR, NOT REPLACE

A good restoration mason is a magician—or so it may seem. He or she can take an old, worn-out building and make it look as good, if not better, than it did when it was new. If you're starting to see signs of masonry damage on your home or business, don't wait to call Top Hat Chimney & Masonry. The longer damage goes unaddressed, the more serious and expensive it is to correct. After too much time, restoration methods will be out of the question and rebuilding will be the only correct way to fix the problem. Our team is often forced to take down and rebuild masonry areas that are too far gone to repair, when an earlier response could have saved the structure.

WHAT IS MASONRY RESTORATION?

Masonry restoration is used when working with any form of masonry on an existing structure. That could include tearing the masonry down and rebuilding, to cleaning and sealing. Typically, masonry restoration is thought of in terms of tuckpointing and repointing.

Masonry Terms
Pointing: This is in relation to new construction. This refers to the space in between the bricks.
Repointing: This is a typical masonry restoration where you remove the old mortar and you replace it with new mortar.
Tuckpointing: This is when you simply add to the existing joint and make the new mortar match the existing.

HISTORIC MASONRY REPAIR

Top Hat Chimney & Masonry does many restoration jobs on chimneys and other brick and stone surfaces and has expanded into historic masonry restoration. Normal brick repair and tuckpointing mortar is a fine art and requires an experienced historic mason especially when it comes to older buildings that you are looking to preserve.
