Top Hat Chimney & Masonry was founded by Michael Coggins in 1979, but his path to the business was years in the making. As a down-to-earth, Christian man, Mike started working in his late teens by hitchhiking his way across North Carolina to sell bibles. After marrying his wife, Peggy, 50 years ago, Mike worked in a furniture factory while Peggy held jobs in shops and pharmacies. Then, in 1968 they purchased the house they still live in today. One day, Mike decided to examine the chimney, and it would ultimately change his life. All the black grime inspired him to research cleaning options and ultimately to attend the New England School of Chimney Sweeps in Massachusetts.
Peggy and Mike have worked together for 38 years and counting, running the company until their son Matt was ready to take over the family business. Today, Top Hat Chimney & Masonry still operates with the same Christian values that Mike and Peggy stand for. We ensure that each home we enter is treated with respect, and when we leave we want every homeowner to feel safe enough to use their fireplace, wood stove, gas, or oil flues with no worries.
