About Top Hat Chimney & Masonry

Top Hat Chimney & Masonry was founded in Thomasville, NC in 1979 by Michael Coggins. He is a very down to earth, Christian man. Mike started working in his late teens, hitchhiking his way across North Carolina to sell Bibles. After getting married to his wife, Peggy, of 50 years, Mike went to work in a furniture factory and Peggy worked multiple jobs in stores and pharmacies. They purchased the house they still live in today, in 1968.  

Mike's passion for chimney sweeping began at his own home.  Once seeing all the black build up that was in his chimney, he decided to do some research on it  and found himself at the New England School of Chimney Sweeps in Massachusetts in 1979.  Top Hat Chimney & Masonry has been around for 39 years and counting. This company was built on everything that Mike and Peggy stand for and that is good Christian morals. We give our customers 100% to make sure that every homeowner feels safe enough to use their fireplace, wood stove, gas or oil flues, with no worries.

About Matt Coggins, Current Owner

Matt Coggins took over the family business. His background includes:
  • Graduated from East Davidson High School
  • Studied Culinary Arts at GTCC
  • Studied & participated in Historical Masonry Restoration in 1998
  • In 2012 , he attended college at DCCC to study oil Furnace servicing. 

Top Hat Chimney & Masonry is a family owned and operated business. Matt and his wife Farrah were married on May 8th, 2021. Together, Matt and Farrah run the business with Matt in the field and Farrah in the office.
